Movement Building Yard (from 2 to 6 yo)
The basic idea of the movement building yard is that there is no ready-made movement situation, but the children assemble their own movement environment using various building elements. Such building materials can be cloth tubes, blown up inner car tubes, benches, boards, boxes etc., which are then used by the children to build a movement landscape. In connection to this, movement is being challenged and each child decides individually how it wants to move around and how far, how high etc. it wants to go. The prepared space, including all necessary movement equipment has to be designed in a way so the children can develop their immediate, personal interest to solve the given movement situations. Up to eight children can occupy themselves with the equipment of the building yard, there is enough space and material provided so they can build accordingly. The point is to create a motivating, interesting, prepared environment for children where they can choose to build from their current starting position and the adult is present as contact person if/when the child has a question.
The concept of the movement building yard emanates from the present abilities of the child and its competences. This means that a movement process isn’t only right when the child can retrace movement strategies stimulated by norm or adults, but it can also develop solutions independently. The children are their own masterbuilders of their movement development.
